The Lady of Shallot

The story of "The Lady of Shallot" is said to come from an ancient Italian story, and Tennyson made connections with the Arthurian legends through Sir Lancelot and Camelot.
The first few verses of the poem set the scene-

"On either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,
That clothe the wold and meet the sky;
And through the field the road run by
To many-tower'd Camelot;
And up and down the people go,
Gazing where the lilies blow
Round an island there below,
The island of Shalott.

Willows whiten, aspens quiver,
Little breezes dusk and shiver
Through the wave that runs for ever
By the island in the river
Flowing down to Camelot.
Four grey walls, and four grey towers,
Overlook a space of flowers,
And the silent isle imbowers
The Lady of Shalott. "

We learn that there is a mysterious lady imprisoned in a tower on a lonely island in the middle of the river that flows to King Arthur's castle, Camelot. Nobody has seen her, only the workers in the fields have heard her singing.
It turn out that she has some kind of curse upon her, the origins of which are very unclear nd even she does not know for sure -"She has heard a whisper say....". She is forbidden to look out of the window directly, and has to view the world via a mirror. She weaves a tapestry of the things she sees in the mirror to keep herself occupied.
While she doesn't seem to be too bothered by her fate - "And little other care hath she", she does feel depressed when she sees young people living their lives - "I'm half sick of shadows".
One day she sees the reflection of the gallant, handsome knight Sir Lancelot returning from a quest and she is caused to look out of the window toward Camelot. Then the curse begins...
The tapestry flies out of the window, the "mirror crack'd from side to side". She leaves the tower and finds a boat in which she lays herself down. The boat carries her down the river to Camelot, and she slowly dies while it takes her there. She dies singing her own death song. The boat finds its way to King Arthur's hall, where all wonder at what or who she is. Poignantly, considering he doesn't realise that he is the cause of her death:

"But Lancelot mused a little space
He said, "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shalott."

There are several interpretations of this poem:
1. Women are expected to behave in certain ways and should suffer the consequences if they are disobedient.
2. The idealisation of women as untouchable "angels" or "saints" and their consequent isolation from society is used by men to oppress them and to keep them in their place.
3. All humans have emotional needs, but artists and scholars must make sacrifices if they want to make their achievements. What happens to such people if they suffer a moment of weakness? Are they destined to suffer a fall as a result?
Remember that Lord Tennyson was Poet Laureate, and a reluctant one. He had to write poems to please and praise the Queen and State rather than those which expressed his own inspirations.
I love this poem, especially with the visual representations by Waterhouse (which are, incidently, exhibited in Manchester City Art Gallery....) and the musical adaptation by Loreena McKennitt. I hope you enjoyed it too.

  1. Hello everybody, this week we learned Lady of Shalott.Actually,I like it.It's mysterious story as in the Rapunzel.Especially,I like the activity that we made in the class with the help of it I understand the story completely. As well, the poem is read by Loreena McKennitt.I like it the most.It was perfect.Although the poem is too long, she read it so beautiful that I wasn't bored instead I enjoyed very much, but the end of the story was a bit upseting nevertheles it was very enjoyable...

  2. I would like to know how Lord Tennyson would have written his poems if he had not been restricted to please and praise the Queen. If he had written poems which expressed his own feelings and inspirations, maybe we could have more interpretation of his poems, and this interpretation could be admissible for both men who wanted to keep their wives in their places and women who had to suffer a consequence because of being disobedient.I still admired The Lady of Shalott.Because of the fact that our time is different from the period when the poem was written,I could only focus on the pain she suffers and her emotional conditions.I couldn't have guessed the poem had some interpretation as they were mentioned above.

Hello everybody!I liked this week's lesson very much. The Lady of Shallot was very excellent poem. Moreover, its song was very efficient and motivated.Tennyson made a good match with pictures. There were very different and strange emotions in these pictures.I could not understand at first, but later I understood. They symbolisez deep emotions.I felt very sad about the woman.Everytime the women are exposed to such things...

  5. Hi everybody. This week was not enjoyable for me,bvecause I did not like it.This poems story was not attractive to me.It has lots of nonsenses in it.There were lots of questions which were not anbswered. Why did they not see each other?(Lady Shallot and Sir Lanvelot). Why did the author believe in curses? If he did not believe in curses, why did he wrote?:D:D bla bla. see you next week:D

  7. I got more impressed by the song than I did by the story. The song itself mentioned all the story efficiently. That it was not so impressive may arise from that the love scenes were not seen in it.The story was a bit constant from the aspect of the action process. The women were restricted in that time and that was seen indirectly in the story.Tennyson used the words intelligently in my opinion as we saw in the poem and he gave the messages in a clever way.finally , I wanna say what a pity the artists were restricted.I think Art should always be free...

  8. Hi everybody. This week topic was touching and a bit sorrowful. We witnessed a good harmony of poem and narrative. As for the music I found it relaxing. The way women status in society is given in a perfect way in Victorian time.It is exact talent of an artist to my mind.It is open to different interpretations and it is the pure beauty of literature.Nature,emotions,believes,art...are all included in this masterpiece.I liked it very much...

  9. Hi everybody! This week's subject was not easy to understand all the things flowing in the story but it has motivating extras for the reader not to make them under the stressful or boring story such as the visual masterpieces which give people the feeling of being over there, the tide of the story and the beautiful song which flavor to the story being understandable and enjoyable for the readers. In the end, you will see that this beautiful song will get you to the deepest feeelings by bringing a flutter to your hearts...

  10. Hi!Firstly, what I want to say about the poem is that it has an unique plot, which makes it mysterious.I liked its song.It was so amazing! In addition, its paintings illustrate the plot very well.On the other hand, the fact that the reason why such a curse happens is unclear, which makes one curious.Anyway,I liked it.It was enjoyable.

  13. Hi friends! this week was very very impressing.I liked The Lady Of Shallot. It is very mysterious story and there are o lot of themes. The nature is amazing, river, nice kinds of plants, too. On the other hand, there are miserable things such as the death of The Lady.
This story can be interpreted in different ways, poet was very successful and creative,I think.I was very sad because of her death:( She fell in love, but he knight realized her after she is dead :( An unlucky situation. Also, the song is very nice,it gives the emotins effectively..That's enough for today.see you next week.

  14. Hi'unfortunately I missed the class this week, but I heard that the lesson was very impressive and I listened the song as well on my own.I've known a little about the story of the Lady Shallot, but I know much now.The story is very mysterious and disappointing. No one is around to release this girl from this curse she's in.She is so poor and desperate. It is so emotional. I liked this story so much although it all contains bad and sad conditions.

  17. The Lady of Shallot by Tennyson, the poem has a mysterious theme and in it,it has supernatural incidents,as well..unfortunately,the lady of Shallot has a very bad fate and she dies at the end, she had a life in which she is like a prisoner having nothing ,just a tapestry, but life shouldn't be like this, and one day she falls in love with sir Lancelot, and goes out of the castle and she becomes the victim of her love and because of the curse about which ı haven't clear idea, for example why such a curse is on her,she dies...

  21. "The Lady of Shallot" was a good expression of the place of women in society in those times. It explained that women had to be obedient and distant from real world. Also I liked the similarities between Tennyson and Shallot because both of them were confined to others' ideas,so in this poem Tennyson had a chance to express his real feelings.I liked both the poem and the song although there were Medieval influences such as curse, but it was good enough to see the reality of those times.

  22. hi everybody.this week ı am a bit late.ı think this poem is very mysterious because there is nothing clear in this poem.events can be understood only by means of interpretations.but there is something clear which is a fact that it is a very sad and impressive story of an unlucky girl.you know from my old comments that ı like literature when it is mixed with arts such as song as in our poem , movies , etc. and this is one of my favorites.last thing ı want to mention is that ı liked the teacher's teaching style( this is for my friends who missed the class:there were pictures and we tried to guess what happened then teacher put them in order). so ı liked the course and The Lady of Shallot...

  25. hi everybody! ı liked the poem very much especially with the song.In fact, there were some things that create confusion in my mind why the Lady of Shallot was leading such an isolated life, what was her fault, why was she forced to live alone in a tower on an island...the teacher had written some interpretation to enlighten us but ım still not satistfied about my questions, but it is not important bacause while ı was listening the story ı felt really sad for the Lady ı thought myself in her shoes even though it was just a story ı was impressed by it.this is my favourite story with the song,ı have been listening the song everyday for about a week:) in our times there is no such kind of events, living in a tower, curses(ı believe them) and etc. but thinking urself in her shoes, feeling her sufferings, her emotions, and her being defeated to a curse can all effect every emotional person like me...and also thank you for the song teacher ı really liked it.it brings me to the tower where the Layd of Shallot lived, may be there was no such a Lady but ı believe there was...

  33. This week we learned the poem of Lord Tennyson, The Lady of Shallot. Firstly I couldn’t guess the story. The topic was too different from my predictions. An isolated lady… A curse… An unrequited love at first sight… And a bitter end… I would also like to say thay I was very impressed while listening to the song of it by Mckennit. Although the song was sorrowful, it made me rested, it took me far away. .

  34. Hello everybody!!!
This week,we covered "The Lady of Shallot".It was a sorrowful poem but pictures which Amanda teacher gave us to predict coloured up it.
Oo...the song by Loreena McKennitt. It was so impressive and relaxing that altough it was a bit long,I wasn't bored:)
    See you next lesson....

  35. Hi!It was an interesting and a little bit confusing story because there wasn't explained why the Lady of Shallot was knocked and fastened in a castle, who did it...A lot of questions are coming after that also. What the curse is and why it happens to her?The story was ambiguous I think but I liked the song very much.It was impressive and touching and it describes the feelings of the Lady of Shallot-her desperation- perfectly!

  36. A prensess confined in a tower..It sounds like a classical prens-prensess story at first but it is different. It is not ending happily and Lady of Shallot dies unfortunately. The story was fantastic and the song was very impressing but dying of Lady was a pity:(

  37. hi everybody..
the song is emotional and relaxing..but the story was ambiguous, complicated.the story creats some question in our minds ;for instance why Lady of Shallot was alone, what was her sin.it is mysterious, gloomy, pathetic story
Also ı liked pictures in terms of portraying the story...

If I were her I would't do like her. it was very interessing for me and her love story was attracted me. she fell in love the man she saw first time. ı don't belive in love in first look but still ı liked it. the most beautiful thing about this story was its song it was very very beautiful ı can listen it everyday '' the lady of shallot''

  42. hı..this week's subject is impressing for me because ı like mysterious themes..:) the position of women in the society of that time make me feel sad about women..The Lady of Shallot is a sad story, it kept my attention on it..ı found tennyson's style good..

  43. Yeah, I liked it very much. I really liked this mysterious story and its medieval style. The Lady of Shallot showed us even if it is concluded with death, living the real life(by means of a knight in this story) is much more important.Sometimes, people choose death over life, when it is beyond endurance more than living. And i like wording of this story very much, I appreciate Lord Tennyson..thanks..

  44. wowwww!what an interesting story and a beautiful poem:)I enjoyed so much...However,i felt sorry for The Lady of Sharlott 'cause she doesnt have freedom and she is cursed-this is nonsense!-At the end of the poem, she comes across handsome knight who she see in the mirror but they cant come together...this is so tragic

  45. I liked the poem of Lady Shalott especially with music. The story was upsetting, the death of lady. The way people behaved against women is unacceptable even though we come across such situations today. How come this 'women can not look out of window'.However there are also a lot of questions the answers of which I wonder much. Why she was imprisoned in a tower is among them. The only negative aspect of the lesson is this for me.

  46. hi everybody! this week was the most enjoyable one I have ever witnessed. I liked the poem very very much. The song of the story was wonderful. While I was listening the poem, sometimes I found myself in different emotional states. The poem, story and the song was perfect. Everything was good, but the end of the story was not. I wish the story finished happyly, but it didnt. It was like other love stories.

  50. The Lady of Shallot was different work with it's sytle and fully sorrowful.Even if it seemed like the other tales at the first sight,it was understood it conveyed lots of messages that are especially political. In that times, people made different commends about the aim of writer when wrote it.Maybe one of them serves more the work's content 'the one of whom the freedom was robbed'. I liked it, also loved the song which is very peaceful, but i didn't expect that pitiful end.

  51. Hi everyone!
That lesson was quite enjoyable. The song was highly good but so sad:( Also, I like the pictures very much; all of them are exceptionally successful. In the poem, we witnessed a desperate woman's depressing story. The expressions Lord Alfred Tennyson used are very effective. Moreover,we can infer different interpretations from this poem emphasizing especially women in those times.

  56. The Lady of Shallot. What a misterious poem.I haven't heard such a kind of interesting and different poem that have misterious meaning. At that time, queen victoria rules the country, but women are in restriction area.what a ununderstanable situation. In addition, the idea that the woman who doesn't go out from a closed area is the best woman.what a rubbish idea. Moreover, we can get other different interpretations from the poem because it is open to interpretation. The poem is very meaningful with the song.when shallot watches from the window, she dies.In my opinion, it is a pshycologic situation.
