Anglo-Saxon literature

So, we have at long last started on our journey through time from the 5th century to the 20th.
This week we (very quickly) covered Anglo-Saxon poetry, and looked at three examples:

an extract from "The Battle of Malden", a poem written by an Anglo-Saxon warrior on losing his leader during a battle with the Vikings; Caedmon's Hymn, composed by an illiterate shepherd during an insiprational dream; and an extract from the epic "Beowulf", dealing with his funeral rites.

What impressions did this very brief introduction to the period leave you with? What affected you the most?

By the way, here is the link to the English Language timeline:

  1. Hi!Although both The battle of Malden and Beowulf are about the similar occurrences,I think Beowulf is the one that is impressive. In both of them, there are wars and heros may be, but I guess only these kind of things may not be thought creative at all.On the other hand, Beowulf have some different events that you curious about. For instance, the women,is thought be as a witch, was the most affecting part of it for me.It was enjoyable.:)About Caedman's hymn, there is only one thing impressed me ,it was the dream. It must have been very special, and so the one who saw it as well...

  4. Hello!First of all,I want to express that I enjoyed the poem,"The Battle Of Malden" the most.It is a nice example of loyalty to a person. The another reason why I have chosen it is that the people who lived at that time showed a resistance to hopelessness, cowardice and treachery.Besides,as you stated before,it is interesting that it was being written at the time of war.Above all,it was an excellent experience.

  7. hi!actually ı like the poetry than the film much more because ı always believe that it loses its orginality when a film of a work's made.in addition,if the film had been made with real people,it would have been more beautiful and effective.ı think animation films're suitable for comedy kinds like the ice age not fantastic ones.if ı watch all of the film, ı'll change my mind.ı hope so.

  8. Hi, first of all, I like these works written in old times,so ı liked the heroic poems called 'the Battle of Malden and 'Beawolf'.In the comprasion with Beawolf, ı was influenced the story of the Battle of Malden more because ıt tells us greatly what loyalty to lord means in those times...What is more, it was written in a war. What an effective story!!About Beawolf, ı can say that it is effective story.I believe the heroes who fight for his people. In addition, ı liked the film of it, but thete is not much accordance with the writings in the poem.About Caedman's hymn, the writings in it resemble our prayer in our religion.İt is excellent, too. From now on, ı will learn more about these poems...

  9. hi,first of all,ı must say that the film isn't as effective as the poem.it is like an animation film and there are differences between the film and the poem.on the other hand, BEWOLF and THE BATTLE OF MALDEN recembles eachother.ın both there are heroic events and both are impressive.about caedman's hymn,it is similar to our prayer.heroic poems are more attractive,ı think.they are make me curious about them...

  11. Hi! i want to say that i am not interested in these kind of poems, but while we were watching a part of scene from beowulf i enjoyed and decided to watch it.Actually the other one Battle of Malden is more impressive and informative because it gives vital information about their life style 'loyalty to the king is the most important thing in that times'...

  12. hi... i haven't heard about them before but it impressed me while i am listening the lesson and especially watching a part of the Beowulf. 14. Hi.Ihave always wondered the old English and Beowulf answered this question. We watched some part of it in the class and I will watch the all movie like my friend Beyza. It was very exciting. Some parts of it were like our Turk films, especially Cüneyt Arkın shows. The poem was a bit different from the movie, but it impressed me very much...

  15. hi..i think beowulf is the most interesting of them. i like it very much although there are a lot of horrifying screens and blood in it.it impress me much and so i want to watch all of it...

  16. hi.ı want to begin by the letters in the poem.both the letters and the language which was used are very different from today's.as filiz said there are differences between the film''beowulf'' and the poem, but ı liked the film a lot.and caedmons hymn...ıt is very interesting because of its writer.how can a person feels and writes such an emotional hymn,ı coulnt believe.these people lived in ancient times but they succeeded to do something immortal.ı am curios about all of these examples

  18. Hi, actually i am not so interested in poetry but i like Beowulf and The Battle of Malden. To be frank it attracted my interest.I actually consider the heroic aspect of them.I don't think I would have much interest for them if "love" or "romance" are depicted in them.On the other hand I try to reconcile the main point of literature studies with other fields such as linguistics, sociology and history.Comparing the mentioned pieces with the ones in my own literature and evaluating themin different perspectives is another style approach of mine to such events...

  19. Hi…It was a very bloody and thrilling lesson, but also very enjoyable:)I was most affected by Beowulf and I am glad for having opportunity to watch it.However, in the film there are some conflicts with poem; In the film dragon was Beowulf’s son not in the poem, narration of funeral ceremonies in film and poem were different from each other.Anyway, except for these conflicts, the poem was very exciting.Visuality of lesson was better to remember .Maybe for this reason Beowulf was the most memorable for me …thanks…

  20. Hi!we learned about the types of heroic poems and they were very impressive when we watched the short part of the "BEWOLF".Some parts of the film were exaggerated but this made the film attractive. After ı watched it,ı wondered ıt a lot and ı want to watch all of it soon. These kind of poems showed that courage, braveness and loyalty to the leaders had great importance in their life. This was a great proud of them.

  21. Hi..I heard about Beawulf, but I didn't have any idea about the Battle of Malden and Caedmon's Hymn.I enjoyed watching the film of Beawulf last week.As semra said, the film and the story of Beawulf are different. The Battle of Malden is impressed me most.It explains real things, people and loyalty to their leader. They couldn't give up the leader. They wanted the leader came back from the warplay although they knew the leader had died.

  22. hi...I didn't know something about beowulf.Actually I am not interested in such heroic events very much. But after I watched it,I thought it is interesting, attractive.Especially in terms of comprehension to the story the film was more effective and more understandable.Because of old english used in poem
it wasn't clear.Maybe I watch the whole movie...

  23. hello.. we made a start to english literature last week. ın fact i was impressed by the topics, particularly the battle of malden most. it reflected the feelings of people, their loyalty and respect for the leader mentioned. i felt as the people felt..also i had a good time watching the movie of beawulf. it was very fantastic :)

  24. Hi my dear teacher and my friends... It is the first time I have ever heard about Beowulf. The poem didn't affect me very much but I liked the film very much. It was very bloody and thrilling but on the other hand It was very exciting. I'm visual person so Ilike visual things more than others.Anyway I like romantic and funny films more than heroic films but I really like it. Furthermore I see that every culture's life style and history are almost similar with each other. It seems like our Molkoçoğlu films very much.

And more interesting stories and poems are waiting to be learned :)Thats all for now...

Hi!I like 'Beowulf' very much because ıt was so impressive and heroic. Before I watched it last week,I hadn't known anything about it and I hadn't heard anything. After wathing,I decided to watch the whole film. Also 'The Battle Of Malden' was the most beautiful example of loyalty to a king.If the king wants their lives from them to get rid of all the bad things, they can give their lives without thinking about it even one minute. Also the thing that made it different from the others is that it was written during war.I can not find a sentence to explain it,that is breath-taking.I agree with Sinan. That kind of things should be shown as a movie to learn something about the history of English Literature.Beforehand I have loved the history of all the languages, and now I am waiting for the next week's literature and history subject...

  64. Hi, friends.Firstly I want to talk about the poem Beowulf.Although in some ways the poem wasn't realistic, I like it because I felt the feelings the poet had.The poem is more plausible than the film version in the poem, the heroic sight of characters is given in a very emotional way.As come to The Battle of Malden, it's really a wonderful.I really liked this poem.I was very affected from it when I first read it.Especially the sentences '' I'm old, I'll not go away, but I plan to lie down.By the side of my lord, by the man so dearly loved.''...

  65. firstly i'd like to apologize to my dear teacher for being too late about writing something.secondly i thank her because she provides us to be more active in learnig this interesting literature.i think learnig a language needs to be learned about its culture.and of course to learn culture of a nation effectively is possible by learning its literature.in this way(blog spot system) we can find out english literature effectively.in that class we talked about "BEOWULF".it is more excited and emotional bacause the end of the adventure hero and brave beowulf died.it is not similar to turkish tales.because in turkish stories every time there is happy end.so this made me unhappy.

To tell the truth, ı thought that literature lesson wasnt gonna be interesting, but as ı learned something my thought has changed in a positive way. ı was absent that day so ı couldnt watch the film of Beowulf. But ı know something about it beforehand. It is a heroic n emotional poem. What impressed me so much are dying of Beowulf at the end of the poem n the strong loyalty to his leader in the Battle of Madlen. They are really important topic for Eng literature. I hope we ll learn more about Eng literature n tell them our students : )

  67. Anglo-Saxon culture can greatly be seen in the literature of that time. The main Anglo-Saxon works were Beowulf and Battle of malden. Beowulf is so emotional, exciting story that ı got impressed so much. I lived Anglo_Saxon culture with Beowulf. For example;Anglo-Saxon is the term usually used to describe the invading Germanic tribes. I admirer of Beowlf's loyalty. It is fascinating story. ı liked so much.

  68. I lıked Beowolf...This story remind me ''Tarkan'' and ''Cüneyt Arkın'' films in Turkey.I like them as well because I like heroic stories and brave people in general.I enjoy watching this kind of movies although most of the scenes are nonsense and unrealistic..I'm planning watching Beowulf in near future...

  69. Firstly I want to comment on "The Battle of Malden".Although it was a short poem, the agony tried to be shown can be felt easily,so I found this poem really effective. Also the idea of loyalty to the lord is very dominant, and this feeling of loyalty makes the poem more touching. But I won't be able say the same things for "Beawulf".He is a legendary hero,so you want to see him as perfect as possible. However he has a weakness for woman, which then causes a big trouble for him.In conclusion I did not like this poem in terms of content.

  70. hello friendss.. firstly i want to say i like this course because history of other countries affects me so much..beawulf is a legend of egglish and it is interestind due to the fact that we have like him in our history too..and the poem 'the battle of mealden'affects too because of loyalty to the lord... i think i will be affected again with others which will come soon..

  71. 72. hello everybody..
actually i haven't heard about "The Battle of Malden" and "Beowulf" before this class and i didn't think that i would love this course since i'm only interested in Turish literature. but after this class my prejudgements turned out to be wrong. From both "The battle of malden" and "beowulf" i've effected from the poem more because of the loyality to the king, the emotions that cover our heart after reading it and the circumstances when the poem was being written.when comes to "beowulf" i wasn't effected from it as it was in the poem. ıt reminded me Cuneyt arkın's films in turkey and i don't like this kind of films since everything is exaggerated a lot...

  76. Hi!! This is the first time I have heard about English Litererure. I am not interested in before but I found it very impressive. The character of Beowulf is similar to our culture in many ways so I don't find it strange.I think the poem is more didactic because ıt is more detailed than the film. It is legendary but on the other hand ıt is very effective.

But ın some ways ıt was exaggerated also ıt ıs dıfferent from the poem ın some stages. The poem ıs more realıstıc than fılm,I thınk.Because of the loyalty and bravery ın Beowulf Iam ımpresssed.

  78. The battle of Malden,Caedmon's Hymn and Beowulf were great examples to start English Literature because they give the information which should be known in the first place then they give the characteristics of the century. When I read The Battle of Malden I learned that loyalty to the King is a remarkable theme in such kinds of poems. This theme is also very logical.Beowulf was also very impressive. When I read the extract from the epic "Beowulf" which deals with his funeral rites everything revived in my mind.It was effective that we watched a part from the movie "Beowulf".The features of the poems of the century can be understood better in this way.
