....a single man of good fortune must be in want of a wife...

Now, a lot of people are suriprised to hear that Jane Austen is not considered to be a Romantic writer, after all, she writes about love and marriage. We must remember that Romantism has no relation to romantic love, it is related to the expression of deep emotions in poetry. Jane Austen's style, on the other hand, resembles more closely the technical perfection of the early 18th century writers such as Swift and Dryden. She satirises her characters, but not with the vindiction of Swift. Rather, she uses a gentle irony to make us laugh at the ridiculous nature of some people. Just think of the opening dialogue between Mr and Mrs Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Recall also the marriage proposal of Mr Collins to Lizzy, and how you laughed at the former's failure to understand that Lizzy could possibly refuse him.

Pride and Prejudice is considered to be perfection in the novel form. The way Austen develops her characters; how the events unfold and relate to one another; the sequence of events in the rising action which cause Lizzy to hate Darcy, but Darcy to love her; how, Lizzy's refusal of Darcy's proposal causes him to reflect on his own pride and its consequences; how Darcy's actions in the falling action make Lizzy reconsider her prejudice of him, and allow her to eventually fall in love with him. When Darcy asks her to marry him again at the end of the novel, they have both undergone a significant amount of reflection allowing them to change their ways and see each other on equal footing. Lizzy finds a partner she can love and respect - and he's also handsome and rich!

  1. hi.. this lesson was better than the last ones. ıt was the most entertaining. it was a bit complicated to understand at the beginning but later it became more exciting. ı liked the plot of the film. the character, Mrs. Bennet made me laugh a lot. her grumbling all the time was really funny. apart from this my favourite character was Lizzy. the thing that ı liked most about Lizzy was her prejudice. ı liked the end of the film(her being together with Darcy). it does not like the turkish soap operas. =))

  2. hi friends! ı liked jane austen's style. she wrote different from the others. she wrote just for entertaintment and showed us the real life and her pride and prejudice was very excellent work. ı didnt watch the film before. she showed us that it is not impossible to be together of the people at different status. the real love deals with all difficulties. mrs. Bennet was like our turkish women. she always spoke even without taking a breath. and she made me laugh and the film made me enjoy..

  3. hello again..this week lesson was about a writer everyone of us know her with a masterpiece; pride and prejudice..ıt was a really a good example that statues of people does not affect love in this respect both of lovers are equal.. I THİNKthe film of pride and prejudice we watched this week showed us this.. AND İN THE FİLM lizzy found a partner as he thought before ;handsome and rich and darcy fell in love with her even though at first she didnt love this shows us however a person is from different statue this is not an obstacle for love..

  4. Hi!I made fun of the topic in this week as always.I watched the film before, which makes it easier for me to comment on it.Indeed,as you said, the old version of the film is better. The latest one isn't as comic as it.The name of the film is appropriate, which shows how excellently it was written.I liked the character,Darcy. His attitudes towards people around him aren't so good, but he actually isn't so as it seems.I liked it.I'm looking forward to watching it once more.

  5. Hi, you all!ı laughed a lot in the last lesson.Jane Austen is a really successful writer.I like her style and novels as well.Firstly, Mrs Bennet made me lauhghed much. Her desire to marry her daughters to young and rich men is similar to Turkish mum's feature.:D Secondly,ı like Lizzy's attitude to Darcy.Girs should have pride to men such as Darcy,ı think.if ı were lizzy, ı would refuse him as well.A man who insults and then says that he loves me can never get a chance for marriage proposal to me!!!ı congratulate Lizzy:)ı wonder what we will talk about next week..See you.

  6. To make a comparison, when I watched the film version of Pride and Prejudice I realised that how harmonious the producers of English serials and films manage to transfer what happened in the book to the audiences and how exaggerated and senseless the course of events are transferred in Turkish serials. To talk about what I understood about the difference of Jane Austen,in this book she didn't create a female lover who falls in love with a male immediatey. It is good for her to remind people about the aspect of pride and prejudice. Before you have some emotional feeling to somebody you should take heart from your pride when the person you love underestimates your feelings and your reputation and then you should think abot this relationship extensively and try to figure out if you are equals for each other by thinking about your prejudice which teaches us a lesson.Nowadays people ignore this truth.

  7. Hi,everyone!Jane Austen is one of my favourites. Her style of writing and her way of making the characters real impress me very much.I watched another version of the film which was filmed after this version. The dialogs among Lizy's parents really made me laugh. Also,Lizy's stance against her mother and her father' support was so amazing.Another aspect is that themes were reflected nicely. And the film made me remember a speech "Do not judge a book by its cover."

  9. this course is very enjoyable especially watching film is best part of it =)we live some difficulties to understand the relationships between sisters and their sweet hearts but we figure out after watching some parts of the film=)i like every character and their speech especially elizabeth she is my favorite.the style of jane austen is perfect.she wrote ironically but she was very gentle unlike lots of writers' sarcastic way.i liked very much and i decided to read her.finally i think the message about love, relationships and behaviours was very impressive =)

  10. hi everybody!!!this week, the most enjoyable part was watching the film. Before we watched the film,ı was a bit bored;but I learnt the subject well after having watched it.I heard this film;but ı didn't watch it.I got a chance to watch it in this course. The person who made me laugh was Mrs.Bennet.She always spoke like Turkish women:) and she wanted her girls to marry a rich and handsome man.Lizzy's attitude to Darcy at first was right. If I were in that case,I would behave as she did. what will we see in next week? altogether we'll see:):)

  11. This week we learned about Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, actually ı had intended to read this novel in turkish, but ıt seemed to me confusing, and ı didn't finish ıt,also ı didn't know ıt has a satirizing aspects. Thanks to this lesson,ı could understand ıt much better..we also watched the film, the characters in the film were amusing, especially Mrs.Bennet..

  12. hi.ı like literature but when it is applied to cinema ı like it twice.ı read jane austen's some of works and ı can say that there is repetition in her works.but when ı consider her time and pressure on women it would be unfair if ı regard her works as repetition.there are lots of characters in pride and prejudice and also lots of connected relationships.but there is nothing that is extra.ı admired to lizzy and also her father.one thing that grasped my attention is that women have no right but lizzy had right to reject proposal.she is proud and rationalist character.centruies passed, now women have lots of rights but only 1 in 10 women can do what lizzy do.

  13. Jane Austen is one of my favorite writers. When I first read Pride and Prejudice,I was sixteen years old.Immediately after I finished the book,I watched its film.Of course the film wasn't as good as the book, but it could reflect the emotional aspect of the book very well. The players were very suitable for the roles, and under the effects of both book and the film the result was that I was on the clouds. This effect has lasted till this day.You say; love should be so and why have I never lived such a love?!I remember my aunt who made her husband write a love letter for her after she read the book.It is very clear that this was written by a female writer.A man can never be so romantic.By the way I have some words for the boys"Boys!Being romantic is not a shame.Be husbands like Mr.Darcy in the future. Please take this into consideration!"
After I read the Pride and Prejudice,I started to explore the other books of Jane Austen. My second favourite one is "Persuasion".To be honest I didn't like the rest. They were boring and always the same theme"What is happening in a small town in love affairs?".Jane Austen is Jane Austen with pride and prejudice, and pride and prejudice can cover the boredom of other books by itself

Hi,everybody. This week, we learned Jane Austen and her work.We watched the film Pride and Prejudice.I enjoyed very much.As well, ı liked the style of Austen.I haven't watched the film before. And so I liked very much.As well, some characters in the film are very funny, for example,Mrs Bennet. She behaves like a child, she always wants to marry her daughters with a rich man.As well,I like Lizzy. She is very logical girl.If ı were Lizzy,ı didn t know what ı will do...

  16. Oh, what a complicated story it was! In Pride and Prejudice, the connection of various characters is somehow perfect.I was deeply impressed by the personality of Lizzy. Also,Darcy's pride and Lizzy's prejudice help them come together again, that's wonderful! The way of reflecting marriage, emotion, classes and reputation by different events with irony is an exceptionally good example!

  17. hello everybody...pride and prejudice was so good i think. i like it =) especially mrs.bennet is the most funny charecter of the movie...and jane austen is very succeessful. she was educated at home but she writes like a well educated person...

  19. This week we learned Jane Austen and one of her novels, Pride and Prejudice. I think, it is a classic of Jane Austen. I like every character in the film but Mrs. Bennet is my favourite because of her enjoyable attitudes. :) She always wants her five girls marry with rich and noble men. This shows us that the wish to find out a wealthy husband keeps its validity even after 200 years :) When Mr. Darcy proposed to Lizzy for the second time and she accepted at the end of the film, I expected that both of them would show us their happiness somewhat. However, they didn’t do anything and kept on walking. It wasn’t a passionate love as much as in Romeo and Juliet’s.

this week,we covered Jane Austen and watcted the film-Pride and Preduje-Iwas very suprised that Jane Austen was never married but her masterpieces are about marriage.Anyway,i watched the film with pleasure:)Especially,i laughed at the dialog between Mr and Mrs Bennet:)In addition,Darcy's behaviors are interesting! However, the lovers come together:)

  21. Hello friends.Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a nice novel to enjoy literature.Although it is a bit complicated at the beginning it becomes clear to understand as the plot progress.Marriage is an universal theme all over the world and there are mothers trying to find husbands for their daughters. This novel is a good example of it.Pride and Prejudice could not come against love and marriage. It is not a passionate love but passing over some turbalances they resch to love and marriage, understood each other.I think it is important to understand each other of a couple to marry

  22. Hi everybody! Before starting to write, firstly I need to express my thinking about the best character about whom nobody tells anthing as I know: MR. BENNET :).In my opinion,he was rare character who overcame all the prejudice of that times. Also, giving the chance to your children to talk about their feelings without hesitating was unbelievable ıf we compare this times' situations with the that times'.If you are thinking to marry with a beautiful lady or a handsome man, this is the father that you need to find:).If ı need to express my feelings about Lizzie, her beauty and the deep meaning of her momentary love are unspeakable! While stopping my words,I want to tell my friends a point of no return:There is no proud in love and shouldn't be too...

  23. hello everybody:)Again love, love and love...:)Pride and Prejudice, love and comedy are together and as a result very successful work.I had watched the 2007 version of the film-Pride an Prejudice. But it was so boring and wasn't comic that ı didn't watch the end of the film. But in the classroom we watched if I am not wrong 1995 version.I liked it very much though we didn't watched all of the film.Mr. Bennet's speech was full of comedy.I laughed too much and I think all of my friends liked it too much.I hope we will learn subjects like this next weeks:)

this week's topic is so exiting and complicated as well,of course ı am mentioning about Jane Austen'Pride And Precudice. To watch this film was a big pleasure.ı read this novel when ı was in high school and ı admired it as ı did this week.At first ı couldn't comprehended why Lizzie rejected the proposel and why she behaved such a precudice manner against Darcy because they are a well matched couple from the very first, however there are double marrige at last:):)

  25. hi friends!
this week was very very nice and enjoyable.I like Jane Austen and The book and film"Pride and Prejudice" I liked the film most.Mrs.Bennet is very very comic:)She isn't like a typical women. What attracts me so much is the event between Lizzie and Darcy. They love eachother, but one has prejudice and other one has pride.I think Lizzie was right about her rejection first time.On the contrary, she accepted the proposal later and I was very happy:)there are double wedding ceremony and it was very nice. This week I enjoyed soo much after some weeks.see you...

  26. Hi everbody,
We looked at 'Pride and Prejudice' in our last lesson. It is really a good novel.I like it much while watching it.There are a lot of different and ridiculous charecters in it.For example,Mr and Mrs Bennet and Collin's marriage proposal...On the other hand, there are very serious charecters,too-Darcy and Lizzie.Darcy's pride and Lizzie's prejudice affected their own relationships negatively first, but then, they understood that they loved each other. Also,Jane Austen is not a romantic person but it is interesting that she wrote such a good novel, too.

  27. Hi..I was absent this lesson but I learned that the teacher told about the novel Pride and Prejudice.I had read this novel when I was in high school. However,I didn't enjoy very much but I was bored!I didn't even last reading to the end of the novel. There were lots of characters and their relationships between eachothers were different and bizarre also.Maybe,it's translation was bad I dont know.I know that I didn't like it :) Then I watched it's film version. When we compare the film and the novel,I think, the film is better. It is comprehensible whereas the novel is more abstract..

  28. Hi everybody!I had missed the romantic things..This lesson was very enjoyable especially the film part:DMrs.Bennet is the best one:DMrs.Bennet and her husband were very funny because of her husband behaviour to his wife.I'm impressed one thing which is Lizzy's prejudice that she is very right...maybe Darcy was impressed her this behavior,we don't know this...

  30. hi friends
Pride and Prejudice. What a complicated it is! I think Jane is an interesting woman as although she was home educated, she became the first important English female novalist. As far as i see from the film, why Jane Austen didnt marry is because of her prejudice for men.I like the film.Relationship between men and women is very complex. The girl's only aim is to marry a man,no matter who he is.What a nonsense goal of marrying a man who they dont know! However,i have to confess that we should think the circumstances of that time.We dont know their situations. No Prejudice:)

  31. I'm surprised when I learned that George Austen encouraged his daughter to read and write. As far as I know in this time being educated was an unusual event for women,so I found it surprising. Also I liked the Jane Austen's style because she didn't exaggerate the events and make fun of humanbeings. In addition, she wrote her novels realistically. That is,her plots were similar to the real life situations. In our daily lifes, our relationships have twists and turns of emotion as well. When it comes to "Pride and Prejudice,I was a bit confused to understand the plot.but after I had watched the parts of the film,I understood main points and characters and I wonder the rest of the film:)I hope I will watch it later. Finally,I love the motto of Lizzie "I'm determined that only the deepest love will induce me into matrimony".I think so....:)

  32. Jane Austan is a very good writer. we can understand this from her arts. especally sense and sensibility and pride and prejudice are wonderful for me. we watched pride and prejudice last weeek it was the one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. ın the literature course watching films and videos motivates me.It is more memorable for all of us.ın pride and prejudice, firstly there was an impossible love but then the impossible love become real. the last thing ı want to say is there shouldn't be pride in love so the happy end for a story like this is wonderful.

  33. Hello everybody.I realy like this writer.Namely:Jane Auston...and I want to add that this English people are really hardworking and deserves to crapping. We Turks hasn't made not much film from our masterpieces but we can easily understand that they like to think about their childs future and givce them presents:their history...Film was excellent and I said if didn't finish. And the life of the writer is different also;she took her education from her father.I think this kind of education is more powerful,at least can be morte powerful if it is applieds properly:tolerance, rewards and not wanting the excellence but wanting the progress are much more effective indeed. And ''Jane Auston''....Pride and Prejudice is also attractive. It shows the importance of humans itself before the other things:money, beauty etc.I want a love like this:D take care of yourselves:)

  58. Hi everybody!! This week we have covered Jane Austen an one of her masterpieces Pride and Prejudice which most of us read the novel version of it or watched or just heard someway before this class. This shows that it has a universal importance. Her style is impressive I think;that is, she satirises her characters but does this ironically which makes her novels distinguished. We also laughed some of her characters a lot. Since she chooses her characters from real life her style is so realistic, catches our attention easily. In her novel, she satirises the marriages that are not ideal and shows us how completely different people can come together and form an ideal marriage. The way she does this makes her novel fascinating indeed. Although some of her novels bears lots of similarities we read them with pleasure. See you..

  68. hello to everyone!!Pride and Pejuice! An excellent work of Jane Austen. She really knows how to show parts from real life.Film seems ordinary but its really effective and the end of the film gives a good lesson to think on.We must be careful when we give decisions about people!
