The Pilgrim's Progress

This week we looked at the life and works of John Bunyan, an interesting literary figure given his humble upbringing. He's also interesting in that he lived during some very different periods in English history - the Renaissance, English Civil War, the Interregnum and the Restoration.

He adopted strong Puritan beliefs during the Interregnum and started to travel and preach to villagers. However, he was put in prison for this with the Restoration of the monarchy. During his time in prison, he wrote "The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which is to Come", which was to be translated into 200 languages and to never go out of print. It is an allegorical story with the familiar metaphor of life as a journey. The protagonist, Christian, sets out on the difficult journey to salvation and is helped and waylaid by many different characters, all representing human characteristics. At the end, his hope helps him to enter Heaven.

The extract we read in class described a place called Vanity Fair. This was a fair set up by Satan to tempt people with the products of this mortal world in order to divert them from the straight and true path. For Bunyan, the biggest sins in life were offered by the Catholic church (the wares of Rome). Remember, he was a Puritan believing in the purity of worship.

The extract continued with a description of the trial of Faithful, one he was destined to lose given the nature of the judge (Mr Hate-good), the witnesses (Envy, Pickthank and Superstition), and the jury (Mr. Blind, Mr. No-good, Mr. Liar etc.). Perhaps here Bunyan is criticising the English Judicial system. After all, he was put in prison because of his beliefs in 1660, and it is likely he had a similar biased trial himself.

The subjects we have been dealing with for the last couple of weeks are quite different from that of the Renaissance. Maybe you don't find them that enjoyable. However, it's essential to cover them in order to appreciate the great changes that happened in English literature as from the 17th century. Don't worry, we will be covering more appealing topics in the coming weeks!!

  1. Hello!I think this lesson was a bit easy compared to the last lesson.John Bunyan's work was very well-prepared despite it was written in trouble. He contributed beauty to his work by using personification. It contributed easeness to the work to understand.Being translated into a lot of languages shows it is read by about all over the world. It is very surprising.I wish the other beautiful works were translated into many language to read.
:)I liked this work too and it impressed me.

  3. This week we started with John Bunyan and The Pilgrim’s Progress which was written by him. This lesson was more intiguing than the last one. The first surpising thing that Bunyan was a son of an ordinary tinker. Altough he didn’t take enough education, he had a great ability to contribute to the English Literature with writing notable masterpiece. This affected me so much. He was so religious that he continued preaching even after being put in prison. He never gave up the idea of being missionary. I think he wanted everyone to be full of religion. The other thing was the trial of Faithful. I laughed at the character names very much. Mr. No-good and Mr. Love-Lust were my favourites :)

  4. Hi friens! We talked about John Bunyan.I admire her ideas because he is really right. This world is just vanity fair.As he said, life is a journey and humang beings may face many miserable things. In this case, being hopeful is the most important thing as he said.Second reason ı admire him is that he was an uneducated person. We can see that nothing prevent to write.Furthermore, he wrote so many valuable works that these were translated into 200 languages. Finally, we find these topics very enjoyable:D amanda teacher, please dont worry! we love both you and your all courses...

  5. Hi,all!we met a writer who saw three different times, and had a hard life,so this reflected his style. As we understood, the writer was in a pessimistic mood, and the characters were all the signs of it.I think giving such names to them demands creativity and I like it.Yes ,it seems the topic is a bit boring as it is compared Shakespeare works;still, getting to know also this type is good, and the metaphors used in it attract my attention. This different type is also a color in literature in my opinion;therefore,it is a nice experince for us whose lives will be full of English...

  6. The fact that he witnessed these different times makes him one of the most popular writers. The period of puritans must have been painful and restrictive for the supporters of monarch that they even captured what and who left behind the puritan period, but in this way John Bunyan managed to write The Pilgrim's Process. He maybe wouln't be able to write such a writing if he hadn't suffered. The reason why it was translated in 200 languages must be that human characteristics are nearly the same all around the world so that people read and understand clearly. He also criticised Catholic church successfully according to his religious beliefs.

  7. hi friends..This week,we discussed John Bunyan. It is an interesting person. He was a poor educated person and lived in a time including three different periods, but he didn't prevent him from bringing out good works. There was difficult times that he had,he was put into prison .However,he continued preaching to persons. Also his masterpiece 'The Pilgrim's Progress' was translated into 200 languages and this is very impressive in that times, isn't it? :D..

  8. i am surprised at john bunyan's background and his works.in the pilgrim's progress he used interesting similarities i like them very much:)i loved 'the vanity fair' phrase and its using. morever i appreciated his loyalty to his religion, whatever he lives he could continue in his way ambitiously. And i tihnk it is written in different way, especially the personalizations such as Mr. hate-good mr. Pickthank in the court are impressed me because he associated them with the injustice in his real life.

  9. hi,I really like The Pilgrim's Progress, it was written after big sufferings, John Bunyon was poor and did not take a good education, he was put in prison because of his beliefs but he never gave up his religion even in prison and he wrote his masterpiece there. when ı listened about the vanity fair I figured out that we really live in a 'VANITY FAIR' too:( there r lots of thing that ll cause us to forget the other and the real world, but I wanna look at from another side too;in fact most old people especially those who live in a poor life n dont take good education are strongly faithful to their religions or those who know more things than an average person r so too(it is my thought:)).e.g. John Bunyon, John Milton...either way goes to the same thoughts i think. anyway another thing that ı found interesting was the description of the trial. The names of the judge, witnesses and jury shows us that how (Mr.)Defenseless John Bunyon was!

  10. Hiiiii my friends !!!! This week We talked about The Pilgrim Progress. this period is very different and hard period because so much pressure on puritans.John Bunyon who is a follower of puritan, went to villages and preached to people but it was illegal.. because of his preaches he was sent to prison. during the prison he wrote his great work which is The "Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which is to Come". it was translated to many languages. it is a good work but i must admit that i dont find it enjoyable like shakespeare :):) anyway i am curious about next class :):):) see you next week !!! by!!

  11. I think that this week's subject was very deep because "The Pilgrim's Progress From This World to That Which is to Come" was related to religious beliefs and his using personifications made this story charming. Also I found amazing that this story was available in 200 languages,I think it was an interesting number at this time.As I understand from John Bunyan's life story,he was an obstinate man and he didn't give up his ideas which made him different.Final point that I concluded from this story that we never lose our hopes because they will be our eventual helper in life...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Indeed different periods and different writers are complicated to understand all.And Vanity Fair is also complicated.Especially, after the story of Adam and Eve,Vanity Fair's topic is difficult.Maybe this is because of I know the story of last week's topic well and this week topic is new to me.In addition, writer made this subject difficult by using diffirent names to each character and he sembolized them strangely. It's difficult but,it appealled to me a lot.One more thing,I find this term's subject is more interesting than last term.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Really a different man and a diffrent story it is.I think John Bunyan is quite deceisive man, he still works for his idea no matter what the others do to him. They put them in prison, but our writer still stands on his foot and even writes his masterpiece "The Pilgrim's Progress From This World to That Which is to Come".Apart from being deceisice he is also a bit pessimistic and obstinate(as Tuğba said), or its the general situaition that makes him think so and act like that.
Whatever the conclusion is, i hope he is in heaven now because of his sincerety and his stronge beliefs.

  14. hello friends!!we see more changes in english literature as time passes and this week class was so deep.at first I had a difficulty in understanding the subject because ı wasnt in last lesson,so I didnt have much information about different periods such as interregnum;but then ı could.what admired me was that John Bunyan wrote notable masterpiece although he was uneducated. The characters' names were also really fun:)what will we see in the coming weeks?we all will see...have a good day!!!

  15. What impressed me very much in that lesson was of course John Bunyan and his challenging life in spite of all the difficulties he experienced. It was so unusual that he was not educated enough and he wrote a masterpiece. His rejection of Catholocism and not giving up the thing he believed and whatever hardship he had shows how he is so courageous. The message that masterpiece give us "never give up" is reflected very effectively with those religious and metaphorical elements.

  16. Hi friends. This week the topic we dealt with was a bit complicated to understand.I found John Bunyon pessimistic as he told the evil things in life.I think this can be linked to the environment he lived in bad conditions-in prison-The politics and religion determines the social identity and we understand it again.Vanity Fair is difficult to understand too.The message to be justical is expressed in a different way which is extraordinary...

  17. Hi!John Bunyan's works and life are really interesting and entertaining for me.His ideas were different and fascinating. He wrote "The Pilgrim's Progress" in prison, but this work was about real life actually,so it translated into 200 languages, it means that people found something about themselves in it.His using personification is also creditable.By the way,John Bunyan was very hopeful man.Although the jury decided to send him into prison or wanted to hang him,he never seemed to be afraid and lose his hope. Not so much people can behave like him in such a situation,so people should have regarded his ideas.I'm very happy to learn new things, and these are more interesting and intriguing than we've learnt.See you...

  18. Hi, John Bunyan,an educated person and a Tinker’s son, have said me that it doesn’t important to take education to write a masterpiece like this.It describes the life as a journey very absorbingly. I enjoyet it:)) But how he increasingly became religious made me very surprised and how he wrote this masterpiece in jail is very interesting too..Anyway; i like his saying; as he said "life is a journey":))thanks..

  20. Like most of old English literature art, it is one of the religious art. It has a very interesting subject and tells about a christian
on his journey. There are characters named as Faithful, Piety,Sloth,Hopeful etc.. Thisis an allegory for the moral struggle of each person in the world. Also there is another allegory in this art: what does hinder a people from gaining ''The Heaven'' and this is entitled as Vanity Fair in this literature art.I think it is a great portrayel of Christian life. What is more ıt like this subject very much because thanks to this subject I learned why christians are baptized.I am waiting for the other interesting subject of English literature in coming weeks :-)

  22. Yeap, John Bunyan..What a man..It is he who was trying to explain what he thought despite of everything.I think, as he was,his book was different.I like the different explaining style.I think using different name ,such as Mr. Enmity, was effective.I think it will be one of the books I remember everytime:)

  23. hi friends.this week we talked about John Bunyan and his work:"the pilgrim's progress".It is interesting that he is just a son of tinker and hardly took no education, but he wrote successful works.he is very religious man.Although he was persecuted,he continued preaching. He is very determined, too."The Pilgrim's Progress" was translated into 200 languages. This means that it has very universal messages. The last 2 weeks are a little bit different and less enjoyable than Shakespear's time:)

  25. When John Bunyon is compared with John Milton he may not be well-educated,but ı think he was also able to create a masterpiece "The Pilgrim's Progress".As a subject ıt focuses,ıt resembles "Everyman" we see last semester, but in The Pilgrim's Progress, the character helping to the pilgrim is "Hopeful"..ı think this very important because ıt in some way says that everthing can happen in one's life, but what's more important is being hopeful throught of our lives...

  26. hello friends.. i thougt this term english literature would be so comlicated as i couldn't attend first week's class.. contrary to my thougt,in fact,it is not so difficult..we saw john bunyan.. he is not well educated but he create a masterpiece named 'the pligrim's progress'.the massege that the book gives is that we souldn't loose our hope..as we start to think it,without hope we can't enjoy in life and always become unhappy and miserable.what i was shocked about it was that it has been translated into 200 languages.from this,we can understand that it is a great masterpiece.i hope the next classes will be more enjoyable as in shakspeare's time:)good night...

  27. Hi!As in every week,we came across a different and complex literature subject.John Bunyan who was not educated, poor in all bad things tried to overcome all the problems which he would see on the way of his literature and ideal life order.Lıke me,he tried to express his belief or ideas to everybody all around but that meant the penalty.Fortunately not for me now but we will see:)

  28. Hi friends..This week we have covered John Milton and his masterpiece. The most important allegory in english that is the "Pilgrim's Progress". what effected me is that milton wrote this book in prison.and ıf we think those time it is really fascinating that the book was translated into 200 language and according to me this demonstrates how the book is universal.Bulyan had an aim in life so he is very intelligent man ,too.By the way,ı get that ıt is not so necessary to get education to do something that is valuable for humanity. As we see ,bulyan got inadequate education in his life.but he did fantastic masterpieces for humanity.ı think it is talent!see you next class

  29. hi..:)If I were Jhon Bunyan, I would not said everything I believe.Ok,he had strong Puritan beliefs, but that he explained what thought brought him his end:)His personifications like Mr.Blind or Mr.Liar were perfect. He expressed the injustice against him in this way.On the other hand the only nice aspect for him, this made him well known now.

  30. hi, everybody !!
John Bunyan was a different man as I understand from this week's class.he was different, b'coz he did not give up his opinions although he was put in prison because of his beliefs. If I were in his shoes, I would do the same thing, I would not give up my beliefs whatever the consequences would be..

Hi!It was John Bunyan that we covered this week.I think he is a great poet like John Milton in terms of his ambition for success.I'm so impressed by like these people. It must be the best thing that one succeeds sth. in a hard time for him/her.On the other hand, his work was excellent.Indeed,he illustrated characteristics of the figures very well.I liked it.

  32. Hi class and teacher...I really enjoyed this topic very much.I think it is different from the others.Firstly it is a man's success and showing to his passion to a religion.John Bunyan's surname is interesting also.It is as if a Turkish name:))His work is also a masterpiece. He wantted to be a religious person;but his views were seen useless and not to worth to even listen. It is sorrowful for us(readers and learners). It is not a sample of fair for me.Namely behaviours toward to John mİLTOn and John Bunyan is not the same. One man is rich ;onether is poor. But they thought the same things.I appreciate this big man:))

  37. 45. Hello!!this week’s topic is easier ans enjoyable than the previous one.We met with John Bunyan.I think he is a very determined person and resisted to live as he believe so fighted for this in all his life.It is very important to be able to have such a believing personality and being ready to all kinds of difficulties that you may encounter. And his work The Pilgrems Progress was translated into 200 languages. This also shows how big and everlasting work he wrote. In the extract we read,we saw the unfair judial system. He criticized it in a successful way.His being put in prison just for his beliefs is not good.People should be let live as they believe..And your news about coming week made all of us happy :)

  48. Hi!ı think we should think about this poet and his work much more. One of The reasons is that nowadays there arent such poets who can make excellent works and the other is that Jonh Bunyan was uneducated.ı liked allegory and personifications.ın my opinion, the justice havent been appiled fairly from past to present.Surprisingly, the characters havent changed-everythings are same, but the era is different-Namely,some people go through bad things by accident or not as mentioned in the poem, but if we dont lose our beliefs related to our rescues in every cases, good days ll be very soon.

  67. Hello everyone,
I'd just like to clear up a misunderstanding. If a book "never goes out of print", it means it is so popular that it is always printed to supply the demand. Books that are unpopular and do not have much demand eventually stop being printed, i.e. "go out of print".

  69. hello everybody,I know, I'm late for comments but from now on I will make comment periodically:) Pilgrim's Progress is a great work of Christian literature. It is a work which looks backward to earlier traditions and ahead to the work of later writers. The specific traditions it exemplifies are those of the allegory and the homily.Placing allegorical action within a dream is a standard device, dating from the Middle Ages. The long tradition of the homily was a part of Bunyan's experience, both through the popular homily books that were widely available and in his own sermons. I liked the course,I liked John Bunyon and The Pilgrim's Progress.. thank you teacher :)

  70. hello everybody..In this story, it tells about John Bunyan's life and his life experiences. John Bunyan adopted strong Puritan beliefs during the Interregnum, and he was put in prison for this with the Restoration of the monarchy. During his time in prison, he wrote "The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which is to Come", which was to be translated into 200 languages and to never go out of print.
